What is Ledger XRP Tag? How to get Ledger XRP Destination Tag

In my post, how to transfer Ripple to Ledger Nano S, X or Blue, many readers ask me, "What is Ledger XRP destination tag?" So I have decided to write a dedicated post to answer the question because many people face this problem.

XRP is a cryptocurrency based on open-source technology. Many associate it to Ripple but Ripple itself clearly mentions it created it but doesn't control or own XRP Ledger. The coin is meant to make payments easy, quick and pocket-friendly. Ledger hardware wallets support this coin and to send and receive this coin, you don't need Ledger XRP tag (because it hasn't).

If you are looking for Ledger XRP destination tag because your cryptocurrency exchange is asking you to provide it to send XRP to Ledger Nano hardware wallet then for your knowledge hardware wallets don't have XRP tags.

You might be thinking, "Then how can I move XRP to my Ledger hardware wallet; Ledger Nano S, or Nano X?" Then simply read the following texts to know how to send XRP AKA Ripple to Ledger Nano without Ledger XRP tag.

What is XRP destination tag?

Before you jump in, you must understand the purpose of destination tag in XRP Ledger.

XRP destination tag helps a network identify the exact beneficiary or destination eligible to receive the payment. Usually, cryptocurrency exchanges and payment gateways use XRP tags to indicate which customer is supposed to receive the payment. In simple words, it simply helps a business credit the payment to right customer's wallet.

As XRP Ledger mentions, without destination tag, for a XRP Ledger, it will be very difficult to credit the payments and may require manual interventions and sometimes discussion with the sender to identify the payee. Therefore, to make the process easy and smooth, concerned business can enable destination tags which will indicate that right person is receiving the payment.

Since hardware wallets are standalone privately controlled wallets; therefore, they do not require XRP destination tag (not all hardware wallets some may have destination tags) to receive XRP coin. Yes, to send the same from your Ledger wallet you can enter payee's wallet XRP destination tag.

Now after reading the above explanation, you know Ledger XRP destination tag does not exist because it is a private wallet.

So to send Ripple from your exchange to Ledger Nano X, S, or Blue, you will need to talk to your exchange's customer care agent, he will guide you. And Ledger official website also mentions the same, I am quoting exact words.

"Your Ledger device does not require a specific tag to receive XRP," says Ledger official support page.

In some exchanges for example Coinbase, you can let Ripple destination tag field as it is (I mean do not enter anything) and simply enter your Ledger XRP wallet address and send the payment and it will work.

Referring to this Coinbase page for more information.

And some force you enter destination tag, in that case you will need to get in touch with their support team.

Important: If you do not enter right destination tag then you payment will not be received. Therefore, make sure you are following the guidelines given by your cryptocurrency exchange. Ledger hardware wallet support team won't be able to help you in because some exchanges let you skip XRP destination option and some force you to enter something.

I hope it would have helped you. What I personally suggest you even after clarification from your exchange, first send a small amount say 25 XRP to your Ledger Nano wallet to make sure everything is right. Once you receive the small transaction, you're free to move as many as Ripple you would like to.
